REDcert2 certification - sustainability in the food and feed sector
What is REDcert2?
With REDcert2, expanding REDcert its sustainability certification system to include the food and animal feed market and material biomass use. Building on the REDcert-EU system, REDcert2 covers additional sustainability levels for the food and feed industry specifically for food derived from biomass.
For whom is REDcert2 relevant?
The REDcert2 system is applicable to the stages of raw material production and collection, trade and processing. Example interfaces include cultivation operations, first collectors or land traders, conversion facilities (e.g. oil mills, sugar factories, grain mills, malt houses) and traders.
What are the advantages of REDcert2 certification?
REDcert2 has been recognised by a benchmarking of the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) accreditation. Building on the REDcert-EU-criteria for sustainable biomass cultivation, 18 additional advanced sustainability criteria adopted by SAI can be certified as a requirement for achieving a higher level.
These advanced REDcert2 requirements include topics such as recycling, water management, energy efficiency, soil compaction and social engagement. REDcert2 has been awarded the highest SAI benchmark result of "Gold" at the agricultural level in numerous European countries and has achieved the "Silver" level in many other countries.
Self-declaration
With the aid of a signed self-declaration, proof must be provided to the initial producer or the collection point that the biomass produced meets the REDcert2 sustainability criteria.
Delivery documentation
Each biomass delivery for the production of sustainable REDcert2 products must be unmistakably labelled (including the certificate number on the shipping documents) and weighed or measured to determine the quantity.
Mass balancing
A mass balance system must be maintained individually for each site and is substrate specific. It allows the physical mixing of raw material or biofuel deliveries with different sustainability properties. However, it requires that information on the sustainability properties of partial deliveries be recorded separately in the balance sheet.
Greenhouse gas balancing
A mass balance system must be maintained individually for each site and is substrate-specific. It allows the physical mixing of raw material or end product deliveries with different sustainability characteristics. However, it requires that information on the sustainability characteristics of partial deliveries be recorded separately in the balance sheet.
If you decide to work with GUTcert, an on-site audit will take place to assess compliance with the requirements of the REDcert2 system. After the audit documents have been successfully reviewed by GUTcert, you will receive a certificate demonstrating compliance with the sustainability criteria in accordance with REDcert2. The certificate is valid for one year and is renewed by a recertification audit before it expires.
We calculate the cost of certification in accordance with REDcert2 individually, depending on the complexity of the product, the data procurement effort and the product portfolio. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
How does the combination of REDcert2 with other certification systems work?
If your company is already certified according to REDcert-EU you only need to have the specific REDcert2 requirements checked. With little effort, you can open up new markets for your company and increase your competitiveness immensely.
