EMAS - Environmental Management System

The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme seal of approval of the European Union

EMAS is regarded worldwide as one of the most demanding systems for sustainable environmental management. Organizations and companies of all sizes and from all industries are awarded the EU eco-audit label if they meet the requirements of the EMAS Regulation. EMAS participants continuously improve their environmental performance through a standardized management system that complies with the international ISO 14001 standard.
With an annually updated environmental statement, the participating organizations report on their environmental goals and the continuous improvement of their environmental performance. The environmental statement is validated by a state-supervised independent environmental verifier and must be publicly available.
With EMAS, companies meet all the requirements of ISO 14001, as this is fully integrated. An already certified environmental management system according to ISO 14001 can be extended by a participation in EMAS.

Since September 2017, EMAS Regulation (EC) No. 1221/2009 also requires registered organisations to comply with Amendment Regulation (EU) 2017/1505. The amendment regulation now also integrates the requirements of ISO 14001:2015 into EMAS. Annexes I-III of the EMAS Regulation have been revised accordingly and further amendments to Annex IV "Environmental reporting" will follow. Similar to the transitional periods for the revision of ISO 14001, EMAS also has a transitional arrangement:
