GHG balancing according to
ISO 14083

Creating transparency as a transport service provider and identifying potential for reducing energy and raw material consumption

What is the purpose of GHG accounting for transport services in accordance with ISO 14083?

ISO 14083 contains requirements and guidelines for the quantification, allocation, assignment and reporting of GHG emissions in passenger and freight transport chains. It applies to all modes of transport by land, water or air, regardless of the means of transport (ship, vehicle or pipeline).

Unlike the previously applied DIN 16258, ISO 14083 includes operational emissions from transport hubs that facilitate the transfer of freight or passengers from one element of the transport chain to the next.

You will receive an overview of potential weak points and valuable tips on how to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions.

Credibility

Your internationally recognised accredited certificate contains reliable data – a plus in communication as well.

Facts and information

The standard is aimed at all companies and individuals in the logistics industry with the potential to reduce energy and raw material consumption, such as transport companies, transport service providers or users of transport services such as clients and passengers.

The standard defines the requirements for calculating and declaring energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for all common modes of transport, regardless of whether they are own transport services or transport services provided by subcontractors.

The fuel consumption of transport services is determined. From this, the CO2e or GHG emissions are calculated according to emission factors in the standard, depending on the mode of transport. A distinction is made between direct and indirect emissions:

  • Tank-to-Wheel overs the direct emissions generated during vehicle operation (fuel consumption and coolant losses).
  • Well-to-Tank includes not only emissions from combustion but also the GHG emissions generated during the production of fuels or electricity.

The standard provides guidelines on the choice of system boundaries, allocation and calculation methods, and emission factors. It also divides transport chains into ‘transport chain elements’, ‘transport operation categories’ and ‘hub operation categories’, which must be considered separately.
